Lhasa, Tibet

The age of a child to become a monk is 8 years old.

The Potala, built on a hilltop above Lhasa, is one of the most significant and commanding buildings on earth. The outer walls are white—the center section red—the roof gold. The Tibetan parliament met, and the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Pope, lived here until the Tibetan uprising in 1959. The Dalai Lama fled to India. (CC BY-SA ©2006 Dennis Jarvis)

The Potala Palace has earned the name “heaven of arts”, for numerous invaluable treasures are collected within. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. (CC BY 2.0 ©2007 Michael Goodine)
